Momentum Skills Launches Peebles Brain Injury Support Group
Momentum Skills, the not-for-profit organisation that provides rehabilitation, training and care services for disabled and socially excluded people throughout the UK, has launched a new support group in Peebles to assist and encourage people to re-integrate into the community after sustaining a brain injury.
The group, facilitated by a Momentum Skills rehabilitation worker, will meet once per month at local venues in the area and is open to individuals with an acquired brain injury, their families and carers.
In addition to running this support group in Peebles, Momentum Skills also organises similar groups in the Central Borders and Berwickshire as well as providing a vocational rehabilitation programme, funded by Scottish Borders Council, at its centre in Galashiels.
The vocational rehabilitation programme offers support to individuals and their families in managing the consequences of a brain injury, as well as assisting individuals to return to employment, education or training.
Katy Harkin, Momentum Skills Rehabilitation Worker said, “We’re delighted to launch this new support group in Peebles and to be able to help even more people who have sustained a brain injury. Our support groups take place in a relaxed and informal environment, giving people the opportunity to get out of the house, build confidence and to meet new people who understand the difficulties they face and can provide peer support and share information.”
Steven Haddock, who attends the support group in the Central Borders, said, “The support group is absolutely brilliant. It’s great to be around people that understand what you’re going through.”
Bill Robertson, who also attends the central Borders support group said, “Having suffered an accident 15 years ago, it’s only since I was introduced to Momentum that I found out more about brain injury. Through the group I’m able to speak and mix with people who have similar problems.”
